Welcome to the website of Dr Farooq Maniyar, Consultant Neurologist and Headache specialist
Headache is the most common reason why patients consult a Neurologist and one of the most common reason to consult a GP, yet the management is often sub-optimal. I firmly believe that most headache patients irrespective of the longevity and intensity of the symptoms can be helped with. Typically a thorough history will be taken of all your symptoms and various associated factors, and along-with appropriate tests, a diagnosis is made. Studies have shown that many patients with headache do not get an accurate diagnosis which prevents successful treatment. Every patient will get a tailor-made plan depending on their life style and preference. Fortunately, today, various treatment modalities are available including pharmacological medications, injections like nerve blocks and Botox, and the newly available Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and vagal nerve stimulation(VNS)…( Please refer to section on Newer Treatment options). Patients can expect a management plan that is suited to their life style and likely to significantly improve their symptoms
My group has been at the forefront of ground breaking research in migraine. I was the recipient of the prestigious Harold G. Wolff lecture award given by the American Headache society for 2013 and 2014 in succession..(please read further on ‘what causes migraine’ section) . I have won commendation awards by the International Headache Society.
I am also adept at dealing with epilepsy, faints/falls, tremors, Parkinson’s disease, dizziness/vertigo, unexplained neurological conditions including Visual Snow, functional (psychosomatic ) neurological conditions including non-epileptic attacks, and general neurology. Typically, patients can expect a thorough assessment of their problems and an individualised treatment plan.
I completed specialist neurology training through the West Yorkshire Deanery in Leeds. My research in Migraine was conducted at the prestigious University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) in the Unites States. I hold a substantive post as Consultant Neurologist at the Royal London Hospital ( Barts Health NHS Trust) and Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals. I run specialist headache clinics at these hospitals. I am a Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Neurology at the Queen Mary University, London.
I am a keen cricketer and play at league level. The bowling speed gun has shown a steady decline but I enjoy turning up on the park every Saturday!
I had these awful headaches for 3 years and saw several doctors. Dr Maniyar made the right diagnosis and gave me the correct medications and after some adjustments, my headaches are significantly better. I feel like I have got my life back.CH, patient with cluster headache
I was sceptical at first. My first Botox injections were not so useful but I was informed that botox can take time. After the second and third botox set of injections, I have hardly had any headachesPatient with Chronic Migraine
I have a rare condition called occipital neuralgia. This was not diagnosed despite several visits to doctors until I saw Dr Maniyar. He promptly made the correct diagnosis and gave me greater occipital nerve blocks (injections at the back of the head) which have been completely effective. I have these on 3-4 monthly basis and these treat the pain very effectively. Thank youSW, Patient with bilateral occipital neuralgia
Dr Maniyar issued the TMS (Transcranial magnetic stimulation) device for me that has been a life-changer. I use this regularly without any side-effects. My headaches still continue but they are so much more manageable.SM, patient with chronic migraine
You are the first doctor I have met who has given me a logical explanation for visual snow.CR, patient with Visual snow
